Definition: Harassment

Legal protection against harassment is provided for under the Non-Fatal Offences against the Person Act 1997. Section 10 covers harassment and Section 11 covers demands for payment of debt causing alarm.

Hire Purchase Agreement
Definition: Hire Purchase Agreement

A form of credit agreement that is often used to buy cars. It allows for a car to be bought and paid for by instalments. The car is not owned by the borrower until the last payment is made. 

If payments are not made as agreed and less than one-third of the loan has been paid, the car can be taken away (repossessed) and sold. The borrower cannot sell the car until it is paid in full, unless they have the lender’s permission first.

Home Insurance
Definition: Home Insurance

Insurance that covers either the property or its contents from theft, fire, flooding or other damage.

Household Budget Scheme
Definition: Household Budget Scheme

A free scheme that helps those getting certain social welfare payments to spread out the costs of some household bills over the year. Under this scheme, a fixed amount is deducted from your social welfare payment each week and used to pay some certain household bills. The scheme is operated by An Post and in order to qualify you must be getting a certain social welfare payment and your payment must be paid through your local post office.
